Using the Medinet Button in Profile EMR
Background
Medinet is a provider of Access to PharmaNet in British Columbia. Health authorities use Medinet web-based tools to view patient medication history information and conduct Medication Reconciliation. Profile EMR does not perform any the functions provided by Medinet but supports Web based Integration allowing users to access Medinet via web browser by storing their Medinet User credentials.
Access
You must have an active Medinet account to access the Medinet tool on Profile EMR.
- Healthcare professionals must be approved by the Ministry of Health to use PharmaNet to care for patients and need to request approval by enrolling in PRIME, an online application
-
There are two separate processes: user enrolment and site registration (both require the BC Services Card app)
-
User enrolment:
If you are a registrant of a health professional College in BC, they will need your College license number and next renewal date.
EMR users register to be part of the VCH Community Clinical Network (VCCN) -
Site registration:
Once the Ministry approves PRIME enrolment, within PharmaNet:- Share your GP ID to your clinic's Medinet administrator email address.
- Your clinic's Medinet administrator creates your Medinet username and temporary password.
-
Note - PRIME does not create PharmaNet access accounts). The information needed are as below (send these to your Medinet administrator separately):
-
User enrolment:
Login Credentials
- Each clinic has a Medinet Administrator who communicates with our vendor Medinet and only the Medinet Administrator can add and remove users for that local site
- The clinic Medinet Administrator will provide the user with their username and password
- Medinet tracks user logins and automatically sends a series of 3 emails to a "stale user" when the account has been inactive for a period of 3 months
- If the user does not respond to one of the emails by logging into Medinet, they will automatically be disabled
Using the Medinet Button in ProfileEMR
The Medinet button is located on the top main toolbar of Profile EMR.
Important Note - Medinet in collaboration with PDHIS recently made changes to how Single Sign On (SSO) is supported (as of August 28), moving away from its dependency on Microsoft Internet Explorer.
The Medinet QuickLaunch button Single Sign On functionality now requires your Medinet account to be linked to your Active Directory Health Authority email address (Important: if in VRHB domain, enter your VCH email address but replace @vch.ca with @vrhb.org). With SSO, your LAN login will be recognized, and your Health Authority account will be used to log you into Medinet.
Please contact your Medinet Administrator (if available) or Medinet support (support@medinet.ca) to update the email address linked to your Medinet Account.
If you do not have or use a Health Authority login, Profile EMR will no longer log you in automatically. Please open Medinet in an external browser and log in manually using your Medinet credentials.
Follow the steps below to manually login:
- Open Medinet in an external browser
- Click on PharmaNet
- Manually login using your Medinet Credentials.
MedRec Tool or BPMH Tool
You will be prompted to enter your Medinet Username and Password if you encounter one of the following scenarios:
Note - Your Medinet Username and Password will then be encrypted and stored in your Profile EMR account for future use.
Note: Email EMRHelp@vch.ca if the prompt above does not work for you.
PharmaNet Keyword
A Keyword is a password that the client has added to their PharmaNet account through their pharmacy. You'll need the client to provide their keyword in order to look them up. The PharmaCare help desk staff can help the client to remove the keyword if they have forgotten it, but neither they nor Medinet can set a new Keyword up or see the existing one. PharmaCare number is: 1-800-663-7100.

Troubleshooting
Medinet Password Is Out of Sync with Profile EMR
Since Profile EMR stores your Medinet credentials, any password changes made directly through the Medinet website or by a Medinet Administrator will cause your stored Profile EMR password to become out of sync.
If this prompt appears when launching the MedRec or BPMH Tool, it means the stored Medinet password in Profile EMR is out of sync.
Click OK and you will be prompted to enter their updated Medinet credentials:
If the above doesn't work, email EMRHelp@vch.ca.
Unable to Access Medinet
1. Check that you have access to the standalone Medinet website
2. If that does not work, refer to Access steps above.
Medinet Website Accessible, but Not Med Rec Tool nor Meds\ Typing Template
If you can access the Medinet website but are unable to use the MedRec Tool or Meds\ Typing Template in Profile EMR, it’s likely due to one of the following reasons:
- Medinet Username or password stored in Profile EMR is out of sync. Follow steps in MedRec Tool or BPMH Tool
- If you belong to multiple clinics to access Medinet and there are multiple Office IDs linked to your account. This results in Profile EMR not being sure which one to save and therefore Office ID field is left empty in your user account. This is resolved by the Profile EMR team manually adding it to your user account.
- Log into Medinet using the Medinet icon
-
On the top left of the Medinet website, take a note of the Office ID (generally starts with an i, e.g., i2781)
- Email this number to EMRHelp@vch.ca. See sample message below:
I am able to access Medinet website, but cannot launch Med Rec tool or the Meds table using typing template short code Meds\ My Office ID is: _______________.
