Side-by-Side Prescription Format
Issue: Upon Print, prescription passes through the printer without applying any ink
Access the Controlled Prescription Form
To generate the Controlled Prescription Form, you have two options:
1. In New Encounter, type dup\ and the Controlled Prescription Form will generate
2. Go to Form and type "duplicate" or "controlled" in the search field. Click Find and then double click on the selected form to open.
Setup Prescription
Fill out the applicable fields for the prescription:
You can also copy details from a previous prescription by clicking on the corresponding Copy button:
If you want to add the prescription to the client's Usual Scripts, click on the Add/Update Usual Scripts button. Otherwise, click on the Create Rx button to generate the prescription for printing:
Print and Review Duplicate
Once you are ready to print your prescription, review the information in the Print and Review Duplicate tab. Below the Prescriber ID, there is a field where you can enter in the folio number. When doing this, it will automatically advance the counter for the next prescription.
Note: This number can be easily overwritten if needed.
Prescription Formats
There are two options for printing the duplicates - the Rx pad and the side-by-side sheets (printer friendly sheets).
We have been moving away from the pads and want everyone to use the side-by-side sheets. We will provide instruction for both below.
Side-by-Side Prescription Format
Key points:
- Note that you can use “side-by-side” printing format for duplicate prescriptions generated by both the dup\ and oud\ shortcuts.
- The side-by-side format solves the problem of the yellow copy gumming up the printer rollers and eliminates the need for printing twice. It also means that you don’t have to deal with the prescription pads, staples etc. Ordering refills is easier because they could be ordered by one clinician for the whole clinic (see below).
- You can also choose to have your signature automatically applied to prescription without having to “wet sign.”
- Like the Rx pad format, the blank side-by-side sheets are also ordered from the College website – but should not contain the prescriber’s name/info on them. That info gets added by the EMR program at printing.
- On ordering the side-by-side sheets you have the option of having your name and address added to them. You should order them with only the clinic name and address as all the other info will get added by our EMR at the time of printing.
- A single physician/NP could order enough blanks from the college for use by the whole clinic. Care should be taken to ensure those blanks cannot be stolen, just as the duplicate pads are protected.
- The side-by-side blanks are fed through the front single sheet feeder, the same way the Rx pad format prescription blanks are.
See section below for details on ordering.
To switch to the side-by-side printing format, click on the Use Side-by-Side Rx format button:
You will then be taken to a preview of the side-by-side format. If you would like to go back to the original duplicate rx format, click on the Revert to Rx Pad format button:
When you are ready to print your prescription, click on Print and Save to Prior Scripts or Print x2 and Save to Prior Scripts button (if you want two copies, use the latter).
Rx Pad Format
Steps to Print the Controlled Prescription Form:
1. Remove staples from Rx book.
2. Remove paper script from Rx book.
3. Open front of printer.
4. Place paper script Headfirst and Face Up (same as a methadone Rx).
5. Adjust paper edge guides.
6. Click the Save and Print button on the form in EMR. Select again for duplicate copy. The form will be saved to the encounter note.
How to Order
Each clinic can have a single physician ordering enough blanks for the whole clinic and can distribute these blanks to the various physicians, (or each could order their own but that is more problematic).
When ordering them from the college you need to be careful not to include too many fields, or you won’t have room for the prescriber’s name and college number.
Here are the only fields you should use to complete your order (using Pender Clinic as example):
- Site Name: Pender Clinic
- Address Line 1: 59 W Pender St
- City: Vancouver
- Phone: 604-669-9181
- Include prescriber name and prescriber ID on sheets: No
These blanks need to be stored safely like any prescription pad would be, for example, in the drawer of the desk in the clinic room you are using.
NOTE: Ideally - in the future - there will be a dedicated printer with a locked drawer that all duplicate Rxs can be routed to. Until then, we are all using the side-by-side sheets via the single sheet feeder as noted above.
